why do you think Italians?
have such a low sense of nationalism?? i´ve talked to northern Italians from Veneto, South Tyrol, Lombardia, Piemonte, they all agreed to say that Italy is in fact a lie and that they should be independent regions.. but i havent noticed the same in southern Italy, (although some told me they wanted the two sicilies back) how come so many italians didnt develop a sense of nationalism like the French or Germans did but instead are proud of their regions?
There's an historical reason beyond the answer. I partly quote GuFo. After the dismantle of Roman Empire, Italy fragmented into several pieces, in first stage because of foreign invasions. Then, it remained like that for more than a millennium, and the only states that had some more land to administrate were the Two Sicilies Kingdom (mainly under Spanish control), the Republic of Venice (taken down by Napoleon), Sardinia/Piemonte's Kingdom and Papal State.
Still, as Italy sort of "united" after 1860/61, there was no reason for italian people to recognize as one population, because the first "italian" government was somehow forced. How can it possibly be that the first monarch of a country names Vittorio Emanuele II, for instance?
It's also notable that in reality the Independence wars were carried on against Austria and Spain by only a part of the population. The first one was supported by Piemonte and Sardegna's Kingdom (moreover, the royal family, Savoia, came originally from France, not even Italy) and it was lost; the second one was supported as well by Savoias and, thanks to the first minister Cavour, France, and it was won, adding some territories to the Piemonte/Sardinia's Kingdom - it was "helped" also by the Expedition of the Thousand of Giuseppe Garibaldi, that conquered southern Italy and gave it to Vittorio Emanuele II; the third Independence war was definitely lost, but thanks to an alliance with Prussia, that won a battle against Austria, there were added some more lands/regions in northern Italy. Then the capital was changed into Rome, after the Papal State fell under the newborn "italian" Kingdom's control (with magno gaudio of the Pope, that felt particularly offended by this act, but wasn't anymore under France protection, so had nothing to do against it but protest).
You can easily see that if now Italy is a united country, it should thank mostly other european states, not itself (exception made for some isolated events).
After all this stuff, the south was in a chaotic and poor condition (as well as the countryside of northern Italy), and for a very long time the lifestyle in the new Country was pretty miserable. More than this, there was the problem of regional identities, forced into only one nation; there's a curious italian film, very famous ("La Grande Guerra", The Great War), that takes place beyond italian war lines in the WW1, in which the misunderstandings between soldiers happen mainly because of their local origin, their "strange" accents, their single traditions that constantly separate each other. World War One was, at all effects, the first occasion in which italian people had to feel unite, but they had several problems with that. And after that it came Fascism, that tried to give italians some National and Patriotic spirit; it somehow worked (if it didn't, Mussolini couldn't have taken his power), but we all knew what sort of state was it, don't we? A dictatorship, that luckily failed and, more luckily, showed all the wounds of that Country, all the weaknesses. It drove Italy through the will of a Republic, obtained in 1946. At that point, maybe, Italy could be finally recognize itself as a country, and italians could refer to themself as a population. But also nowadays it's not easy to find a Patriotic Italian (some of my friends, when excessively patriotic or nationalist, were "accused" by other morons to be fascists..bah).
It's hard to understand how we feel, because Italian mentality is pretty different from other ones, and so it is its history, its culture, its past experiences that gave most of us our personality and beliefs. And the sad point is that most of italians prefers not to change things as they are, even if they could, with some effort.
