Collloidal Silver Nasal Sprays Explained
What is colloidal silver?
Colloidal silver consists of minute particles of metallic (non-ionic) silver suspended in fluid. Some preparations use larger particles of silver suspended in a protein solution. These are usually called "silver protein" or "colloidal silver protein.
How can it be taken?
Colloidal silver can be taken orally. It can also be applied topically to the skin or in the form of eye drops or nasal sprays.
How should it work if taken as a nasal spray?
Silver has well known anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties and has historically been used for this purpose. People noticed that water stayed sweet for longer when kept in silver containers. Also the pioneers of the American West used the same trick when they put silver dollars inside wooden barrels used for storing water. Metallic silver was also used in ancient civilizations for splints and surgical prostheses. Therefore it follows that for bacterial and fungal sinus infections it should be effective.
Does colloidal silver work?
The antibacterial effects of silver are not in dispute. A number of commercial burn and wound dressings incorporate silver salts. However, no evidence-based studies have so far been published in the medical literature to support any of the claims being made for the efficacy of colloidal silver taken internally. Following a review of the scientific literature, NCCAM (US National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine) came to the conclusion that there is no scientific support for colloidal silver being an effective treatment for any disease. The FDA also maintains that there is no scientific basis for the use of colloidal silver to treat diseases and dispute claims they are effective.

What side effects does colloidal silver cause?
The following side effects have been reported with colloidal silver: eye and skin irritation, gastric irritation, damage to the kidneys and liver, headache, fatigue, changes in blood cells, seizures. Colloidal silver is also thought to interfere with the absorption of some antibiotics (tetracyclines, penacillamine, ciprofloxacin and related compounds) and thyroxine.
Long-term use of colloidal silver, or the use of high doses, can result in argyria and argyrosis. Argyria is a permanent and irreversible change resulting in the skin becoming bluish-gray in color. It is most apparent in regions of the body that are exposed to sunlight. It is caused by silver forming complexes with proteins. These complexes accumulate in the skin. There they are transformed by the action of sunlight into inert silver salts, which are responsible for the discoloration. Argyrosis is the corresponding process occurring in the eyes.
Argyria and argyrosis can occur following inhalation of a nasal spray, oral use or injection of colloidal silver, or following its application to mucous membranes.
Can colloidal silver be used safely?
After reviewing reports of 70 cases of argyria caused by silver compounds, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) established a chronic oral Reference Dose (RfD) of 5 micrograms of silver per kilogram body weight per day (5 µg/kg/day). This is the dose at which the risk of developing argyria reaches a significant level. For an adult of average weight (70 kg, approx. 154 pounds) this corresponds to a daily dose of approximately 350 µg silver.
Is there a safe alternative?

the first one i described also has a black trigger.
i know that one is black and one is silver. im just curious as to what the difference is between the receivers, and triggers.
First off, Ruger does not produce stainless receivers. All Ruger 10/22 Receivers are ALUMINUM ALLOY, whether they are blacked or grey finished. Volquartzen and a few other manufacturers machine aluminum or stainless steel receivers for custom 10/22 builds.
There are NO differences between the Ruger 10/22 receivers except color. The TRIGGERS are technically all the same for all Ruger 10/22's as well, however, the specifications for the Ruger 10/22 Target models will have a lower TOP end trigger pull specification. Ruger quotes that the specification for the 10/22 STANDARD trigger is between 2.5-6.5lbs, while the specification for the 10/22 TARGER trigger is 2.5-4.5lbs. So you are just as likely to get a standard rifle with a 2.5lb trigger as you would in a target rifle, however, you'd never get a target rifle with a 6lb trigger... So technically, the trigger is NO BETTER, however, it's not as bad as it could be.
EDIT: Thanks for catching my mis-type John, I have been re-fitting a slide to a Ruger P-97 all afternoon, so I have "polymer" on the brain. The 10/22 receivers are ALUMINUM ALLOY, and have never been stainless steel, nor carbon steel. They've all been alloy since the first one rolled off the line. You are incorrect, however, that the receivers are "cast forged". First off, Ruger 10/22 receivers are MACHINED, not "cast" nor "forged". Secondly, there is no such thing as "cast forged". Casting is a process of pouring molten metal into a mold. Forging is a process of forcing semi-molten (or even cold) metal into a given shape. By definition, nothing can be "cast forged".
EDIT #2: Bob K is incorrect about the triggers groups being the same alloy as the receivers. New models of Ruger 10/22's are indeed sporting polymer trigger groups (not a typo this time). Personally, I haven't noticed much difference in the performance of the polymer trigger groups vs the old ones. If you want a BETTER trigger on a Ruger, bite the bullet and buy a Volquartzen (stainless steel or blued steel housing and guard instead of polymer), or at LEAST buy a Power Custom trigger kit and have it fitted by a qualified smith (uses existing polymer housing and guard).
