Discovering Italian Culture and Language, just in Italy
Summer is coming and for adults and teens it's time for holidays...and, as commonly known, Italy is one of the favorite destinations for tourists of every corner of the world.
Italy is an internationally renowned country mainly for its artistic treasures and for its lovely towns where it is possible to spend wonderful holidays, but thousands people increasingly choose our country also to learn Italian language and in the same breath to plunge in any aspect of our culture.
For those who are planning to go to Italy for a cultural travel, there's nothing better than the Cultural Courses offered by the Italian language School for foreigners Leonardo da Vinci. As one commentator already pointed out, the standards of beauty continue to change. That being said you must consider the artist of the work as well as the location for which it was painted.
1) Michelangelo's women are infamously "manly" in appearance for two reasons: a) Michelangelo was first and foremost a sculptor, and therefore thought and conceived of the human form in the way a sculpture would rather than a painter. The forms of his painted figures and highly modeled and look as though carved of marble rather than laid in fresco. The masculine physique of his women was also in part because he used male models for all figures, including the women. Female models were rare, very expensive and often women of "ill repute".
2) This image of the Temptation is painted on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, 20 metres above the the floor. The proportions of the figures are such that the human form can easily be understood with the naked eye from far below (no high powered cameras back in the seicento). Also consider the original purpose of the space. Although the Sistine Chapel is now open to tourists, it is the Papal Chapel and the primary "user" of this space was the Pope, cardinals, clerics and distinguished guests, and was primarily a place of prayer and reflection... not a location or company in which one would wish for the arousal of carnal thoughts, so it is probably for the best that Michelangelo's Eve (and the other women pictured on the ceiling) were not erotically beautiful nudes.
