world environment day

The environment to be very mechanically defined is the immediate surroundings of a person which constitute social, economical and biological factors. But our environment is more than that. It is the wind that played with our hair, the land that bore our weight, the water that cleansed our soul. Standing on the terrace feeling the wind on your face and then suddenly…. Choke choke… its no longer that scented pure and refreshing breeze, but a black mist that ideally describes how our environment has been thoroughly deteriorated. How in the rush to be a hi fi individual and excessive industrialization we have forgotten to take care of the very surroundings that took care of us, nurtured us and brought us to the front we are at today.

The United Nations conference on the human environment met at Stockholm from 5th to 16th June 1972 and considered the need for a common outlook and for common principles to guide and inspire people of the world in the preservation and enhancement of the human environment. This led to the establishment of the world environment day (WED) by the United Nations general assembly in 1972. The WED is hosted every year in a different city and commemorated with an international exposition through the week of June 5. The united nations environment programme (UNEP), also created in 1972, uses WED to stimulate awareness of the environment and enhance political attention and public attention.

"Stockholm was without doubt the landmark event in the growth of international environmentalism. It was the first occasion on which the political, social and economic problems of the global environment were discussed at an intergovernmental forum with a view to actually taking corrective action.” wrote John McCormick in the book ‘Reclaiming Paradise.’

The theme of WED celebrated in 1974 was the ‘only one earth.’ Few of the theme in this decade are… 2000- The environment millennium-time to act. It was hosted at Adelaide, Australia. In 2001, the WED was hosted at Torino, Italy and Havana, Cuba. A vibrant display was exhibited owing to the theme ‘connect with the world wide web of life.’ 2002’s theme was ‘give earth a chance’ and was hosted in the Shenzhen province in the republic of china. In the year 2003 a lot of emphasis was laid on the reducing quantity of potable water and the increased areas falling under the water scarcity zone. The main theme therefore revolved around water itself. It was called-‘water –two billion people are dying for it.’ and was hosted in Beirut, Lebanon. 2004 witnessed a continued emphasis on the dying water reserves with the theme being ‘wanted! Seas and oceans - dead or alive?’ It was hosted in Barcelona in Spain. 2005, 2006, 2007 focused on green cities, deserts and desertification and melting ice respectively. 2008 focused in a totally new topic of a low carbon economy owing to the exponential rise in the carbon emissions in the atmosphere. It was hosted in Wellington, New Zealand.

This year WED was celebrated in the colors of green that focused on the urgency for nations to agree on a new deal at the crucial climate convention meeting in Copenhagen some 180 days later in the year, and the links with overcoming poverty and improved management of forests. Hosted in Mexico City the theme was labeled as ‘Your Planet Needs You - UNite to Combat Climate Change.’ The WED is a global effort to make the people around the world aware about the pathetic situation that our environment is in right now. It’ll be most wonderful if the WED is celebrated with fervor and excitement across institutions in the world. It not only will provide an excellent view about the present situation of the environment but also enhance the public attention towards the problem. Eventually more aware will become the change they want to see.
