The ability to see without glasses motivates most eye patients to seek laser eye surgery. Thanks to advanced technology, there are many more surgical options for patients to choose from. If you’re thinking about getting eye treatment options, research is the first step in eliminating your dependence on glasses.

Why do people need glasses?

Most people have common “aberrations” or distortions in their cornea and lens. These imperfections cause nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. Wearing glasses, contacts or having laser eye surgery treats over 90% of eye patients. The remaining 10% have “higher order aberrations” and require a more customized alternative than the average patient.

Traditional Laser Eye Surgery

Customized Laser Eye Surgery

For patients who have “higher order aberrations,” custom LASIK is their best option. Wavefront-guided laser eye surgery creates a customized fingerprint or corneal map specifically for your eyes.

Wavefront-guided laser eye surgery uses a low energy laser light called an “Aberrometer,” which scans the eye - from the retina to the cornea. Higher and lower aberrations are measured and then displayed as a precise 3-D image. This helps the surgeon create a completely individualized correction just for you.

The data from the Aberrometer is translated and interfaced with the Excimer Laser Eye Surgery System, which is used to reshape the surface of the cornea. The Excimer is a laser beam, about the width of a human hair. It takes the digital data measured from the Aberrometer, and moves across the cornea in a tiny overlapping pattern, creating a perfect customized corneal shape just for your eyes.

Benefits of Custom LASIK

There is no better treatment than one customized just for you. Even the statistics agree. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration reports that Custom LASIK patients achieved a larger percentage of visual acuity than traditional LASIK patients. Ninety-eight percent of custom LASIK patients experienced 20/20 vision or better one year after surgery. Here are some other benefits of custom versus traditional LASIK:

Looking for a gunsmith to make a custom revolver?

I've had an idea for a custom revolver for a long time, an extended barrel with an extended and widened chamber to allow for a longer, larger and more powerful round, a laser sight. I have a rough image I did in ms-paint. I know, crazy, but think about, firing an assault rifle round from a revolver?

Uh.....

No offense, but coming from the experience of being a "master" machinist... I have to decline any such offer. Why?

Firstly, designing a firearm is no simple task. You just drew a picture... no blueprinting, and there is no evidence of physical or mechanical workings. Essentially you'd be asking someone (like myself) to engineer a handgun from scratch. By the time I got done blueprinting this, you'd be looking at hundreds of hours spent just getting this thing on graph paper... you'd be looking at $5000-$6000 just for me to blueprint the whole thing (again, you'd be asking me to engineer this, and blueprint... nice n' pricey).

Secondly, Manufacturing. It would take a rather lengthy bit of time to produce a firearm of quality. It would take me (again) possible hundreds of hours in development, and an educated guesstimate of $15,000-$20,000 to get it up and running (I don't do sloppy work, so I would add time making sure it functioned *perfectly* adding considerably to the cost).

Thirdly, Legality. Technically, I could build one without any licensing, etc. (80% 1911 frames anyone?), however transferring it would be a huge fiasco. Could be done... but again, more money... and a hell of a lot more paperwork. Not in the realm of practicality.

See where I'm coming from? Sure, it could be done, but to build it, you might as well throw thirty grand down and walk away for a year or two.

And for the love of god, please never say "assault" rifle. It gets the anti's whipped up into a lather.
