I got a some ice put it into a cup of water

THE REASON IS:
when you add something into a soultion the melting temp. and freezeing temp. decreases. in this case, room temp is not the place to keep ice ^^
the ice "distributed" it's temp with the water... and cup... and made those three things cold enough so it can keep it's stable form of ice. until it melted from the room temp., so it didn't like dissolve instently or turn into water or gas you know? The room temp melted it.
