Ancient Glass
The invention of glass
Glass was invented ages ago before human was aware of its extensive usage as currently found in modern technology. Pre-historic humans exploited glass for hunting equipments, cutting devices, and medium of exchange or now called trading. Fulgurites and obsidians were the ancient forms of current glass, provided by nature during the heat fusion resulted after the lightning and volcano eruption. These elements of ancient glass were used by the pre-historic humans for their basic needs.
The first historical fact of the glass invention was noticed after the manufacturing of glass containers circa 1500BC by Mesopotamian and Egyptian people. The conversion of glass function to such extensive usage was started circa 700BC in Mesopotamia and after that Egypt around 500BC. The large manufacturing of glassware had then spread to countries along Mediterranean Sea. In the early years, the glass production went through tremendous efforts led to high cost and big time consumption. Their insufficient knowledge and methods resulted low quality and inaccurate handling. Gradually, the glass artists invented new techniques to create better products of glass, such as vases, jewelries, and other fashion accessories. This invention had increased the value of glassware and considered as higher class style if possessing these objects. By that time, the glass was then applied to domestic appliances to preserve fresh fruits, milk, honey, and other types of foods. The new invention of colorful glass had dominated the glass industry, and later considered as Glass Golden Age during the Christian era. The colorful glass was used by many churches which the evidence of this glass application is still found on the old churches built centuries ago.
United States established their first glass plant in Jameston – Virginia around 1608. After famine widely engulfed this State for more than a year as well as the Indian Massacre in 1622, the plant was closed. In 1739, Caspar Wistar established another plant in Salem County - New Jersey, but it was declared on bankruptcy in 1780. This was later followed by Deming Jarves who established his glass plant Boston & Sandwich Glass Co in 1825. The first pressed glass called Sandwich glass was then invented and large demands on their products started to increase. Another plant Bakewell Co. was opened in the same year in Pittsburgh, producing the glass through pressing and blowing process.
The extensive usage of this type of pressed glass was widely known in housing industry, applying glass window to houses. The first technique they implemented was by blowing the smoldering gob and twisted it to flat, yet this exercise resulted a bump in the center of it, called crown hence it was called a crown glass. A later technique they discovered was by blowing the gob into a form of cylinder then after the glass was cooling, cutting it into several slices in certain thickness and re-heating it to obtain pellucid glass. Other forms of glass were later produced and applied widely in food and beverage industry started from 1858, firstly noted on top-screwed whiskey bottle made by Mason. It was quickly developed into new packaging usage for foods container in 1880 and other application for house decorations.
